This article discusses the Socket Assignment tab in the Sockets & Accessories page, which shows information about all the Sockets ordered for and connected to your account.
The Socket Assignment tab shows information about Sockets that you ordered, or already connected to your account.
To show the Sockets Assignment tab:
- From the navigation panel, click Account > Sockets & Accessories and click the Socket Assignment tab.
These are the explanations of the columns in the Sockets & Accessories page:

On the Sockets & Accessories page, you can unassign Sockets to sites.
After you unassign a Socket, we recommend that you wait at least 5 minutes before disconnecting the Socket or its connections to the network. This lets the Socket complete the unassign process.
By default, Sockets are automatically upgraded to the newest version as part of the Cato platform. However, in some scenarios, you might want to skip an upgrade. For your convenience, you can quickly pause or resume upgrades on a Socket directly on the Sockets & Accessories page. You can also manage this setting as follows:
- For a single Socket: Network > Sites > [site name] > Site Configuration > Socket
- For multiple Sockets (bulk upgrade): Network > Sites
After manually upgrading to the newest version, the Socket resumes the automatic upgrade process.
To pause or resume upgrades for a Socket from a site:
- From the navigation menu, click Account > Sockets & Accessories.
- Click the three dots to the right of any Socket.
-
Select one of the following options:
- Upgrade: For a Socket that was paused, manually upgrade to the newest version right now
- Pause Automatic Upgrades: Exclude this Socket from automatically upgrading to the newest version

If the notification doesn't appear in the notification area then the secondary step to add the socket to the site seems to need updating. As for Feb 2025, I do not see the “Sockets Inventory” as mentioned in the article. What I see is "Sockets & Accessories" which shows a similar screen to the “Sockets Inventory” in the document. See below for the image. Manually assigning a socket to a site from this section does not seem possible as the options are all greyed out nor do I see a option to “Assign to Site” as a Cato editor user account. I will contact support to ask how to manually add a x1500 to a site.
Hi Neil, thanks for your comments. We updated the name of the page in the article and in the screenshot. We also added the information that sockets can only be assigned to a site when their state is “Installed”.
To add to Shmuel's comments above, the option to “Assign” is not displayed and the option “unassign” is greyed out. Also, missing a KB about adding a socket to a site for “pre-provisioning” purposes so that a device's serial number can be assigned to an existing site prior to being online. Phone support was useless regarding this request.
Jose Solis Thank you. Unfortunately, the pre-provisioning feature for Sockets has been delayed. Please follow the Product Update emails for more information.
I updated this article and removed content related to the Assign Socket feature.
Very disappointing that I cant assign an unassigned socket to a site manually.
The product should not force you to have to factory default a device to just assign hardware to a site. What happens when you want to repurpose gear and dont want to deal with the pain of factory defaulting a device. Something that is very easy to do with other vendors is a challenge here.
Please fix this and allow customers to be able to operate the way that best suits them. This will maximize efficient and time by allowing us to do our job more freely.
Justin Kwasnik is this the usecase you are describing?
That scenario is already supported. If you are having an issue with it, please open a ticket.
No it was not supported when I posted. TAC told me you cant manually assign anything. The only way for a socket to be used in another site is factory default. They even performed an RMA for 2 devices.
Justin Kwasnik If the Socket required an RMA, then it sounds like an unusual case. Normally, unassigning a Socket from one site and assigning it to a different one is supported.
We updated the article to include this recommendation:
I am just happy we are not using these devices at jobsites otherwise there would be major struggles with re-purposing hardware. I cant speak for what happened 2 years ago when we went from sockets to cloud interconnect. All I can tell you is the hardware sat at a colo for 2 years on a shelf. I tried to use it again and asked TAC to assign the serial numbers to a site so I can use it. They told me they cant do this and I said I am not going to go buy a usb drive to format and send to colo to ask smarthands to go through a procedure to factory default. I performed a pcap and was watching bi-direcitonal traffic of the socket hitting cato. I have no issues with any of our other vendors with re-assigning hardware to sites. Just not sure why something so simple with multiple vendors is not something cato supports. This wasted hours of my time to get devices RMA and back online. If you dont want to give the customer access to re-assign manually. You should let TAC do this.
